ALEX SMITH : SECRET AGENT QUARTERBACK

By Scary Barry Rodriguez         January 7, 2012

Football analysts and jockcasters would like us all to believe that somehow the San Francisco 49ers obtained their 13-3 record and the NFC West title sans the efforts of Alex Smith. Eight Niner players were selected to the Pro Bowl team yet Alex Smith who directed the offense didn't even get consideration. Mister Smith had only five interceptions all season long. Its quite mysterious how the offense went on scoring drives without anyone driving the ship ! Is Alex the invisible man ?

All the big name quarterbacks like Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez aren't even in the playoffs. Many of those that did make the cut throw more passes than Smith and give up many more interceptions. Smith is not a person with an outsize ego and a headline grabber . He just does the job. So quarterbacks on mediocre teams like Eli Manning and Michael Vick get the credit while Alex keeps on winning.

The NFL is a statistics driven league and that seems to trump team performance. Watching the postgame comments is the same as watching a soap opera. What about Big Ben's bum ankle , Tony Romo's frustration or Drew Brees throwing for thousands of passing yards because thats what it take when your team has no defense ! All the talk about these guys while only by a trick of fate the Niners are 13-3 !

After having been slammed by his team's GM , plus two coaches Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary , most sane  persons wouldn't have the perseverance to carry on. Yet Alex , shrugged it off and now the team has benefited. Its only fitting that the San Francisco 49ers win it all so that the media and the armchair critics will have to eat humble pie ! Mister Smith is living proof that being a jerk isn't a requirement for being a winning quarterback. Coach Jim Harbaugh saw past all the bum raps on Alex Smith and recognized his leadership and the rest is history !
