( SAN FRANCISCO ) - The NBA like all other major sports has free agents and when used only for a short time are referred to as rentals. When the Los Angeles Lakers signed Ron Artest they went the " rent-a-thug " route. They knew what they were getting. Artest has been suspended by the NBA thirteen times, including a one year suspension in 2004 for participating in a fight in the stands with the fans, when he was a member of the Indiana Pacers.
Don't let the Hollywood lights of Staples center fool you folks ! The Lakers have a win at all costs approach. Coach Phil Jackson " the Zen master " may seem to be above the fray but he is well aware of what Artest is about. Ron Artest doesn't really guard anyone. He just tries to get players off their game by putting the body on them. Artest would foul out in the first quarter if the officials just watched him. He has the skill set to excel but is mainly used for his thug skills.
In game two against the Dallas Mavericks , with the Lakers losing and only 24.2 seconds remaining in the game , Artest just had to get it on ! The man is out of control. He picked the very small Dallas guard J.J. Barea to vent his anger on. Barea , a bench player had totally frustrated the big Laker front line. He weaved in and around them like a child in a forest of tall trees. Artest had to get payback. It was an ugly scene. The NBA court play is not a tea party and very physical but Artest takes it to another level.
If we were talking about the streets in the hood then Artest would be due for a major beat down but we are talking about the NBA. The Scary one thinks Ron Artest has had plenty of chances to modify his thug behavior on the court. The NBA should just do the right thing and take Ron Artest of picture for good ! Fans show up expecting to see a basketball game not a brawl. Game officials can and do hand out " flagrant " fouls but in the case of Ron Artest it is meaningless. He is a repeat offender !
Note : If the Los Angeles Lakers are eliminated then it will be karmic payback for what they represent , the downside of professional sports. In his younger years the Scary one hooped it up. If I had someone do the Artest on me it was fight time ! I don't mean just pushing and jawing. It would be real ! Lets just play ball and leave the thug stuff for the streets.
