THE ROAD TO THE PRO BOWL 2011: PICTURE DAY AND PRACTICE

By Scary Barry Rodriguez            January 29, 2011

( HONOLULU )- Today I had friday on my mind and what a friday it was. Superbowlwayne AKA  Mr. Emotional , the Scary one and Paul AKA Merlin headed out to the Ihilani Resort and Spa for another practice session and team picture day. We got off to a late start and arrived as the AFC team picture session was ending but we had a cameraman there ahead of us anyway. It was an exciting day because Scary Barry had his own dedicated television cameraman, the Hawaiian Elvis. We rocked ! There was a more relaxed vibe from the very start. Maybe it was because the Ihilani Resort, which is run by Marriott, is in such a beautiful area.

Under the hot sun the AFC practiced as the Superbowlwayne and the Scary one rounded up some interviews of bystanders and player's relatives. Other cameramen in our group were taking still shots of everything. I nabbed an interview with ex Baltimore Raven's coach and Fox network broadcaster Brian Bilick. He was very accomodating. When asked he stated that he wasn't in a hurry to coach again. He also discussed the defensive strategies of both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers. Bilick is very familiar with the defensive schemes of Don Capers the defensive coordinator of the Packers and Dick LeBeau of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The media was informed that after the AFC practiced the we would now be let on the field for our interviews. Someone in higher NFL authority realized that  that this year's restrictive rules weren't working. The practice ended and the Scary one and the Hawaiian Elvis went out on the field and interviewed Wes Welker of the New England Patriots, Jeff Saturday of the Indianapolis Colts, Mark Mariani of the Tennessee Titans and Matt Cassel of the Kansas City Chiefs. I used my patented closing line of " I got the GPS to your heart baby ! ". Mark Mariani howled with laughter and hugged me, Matt Cassel laughed but Wes Welker didn't get it ! Maybe he was having a bad day.

The NFC Squad did their team picture spread then got down to the business of the practice. While this was going on I interviewed David Aker's Father Jon and his Father In-law Sven Ekman who wasn't sure about talking to Scary Barry. His wife Dee Ann insisted. Daddy Akers informed me that his son David who is the kicker for the Philadelphia Eagles, is a big fan of Country and Western music. He even was married in special cowboy boots ! This interview was fun !

When the practice was over, I rushed out onto the field with my cameraman for interviews. Of course, the first interview was with David Akers. I kidded him about having aspirations to be a Country and Western music star. He said his singing wasn't up to par. His Dad had already told me David was a lousey singer ! Then I interviewed Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys and Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons. Matt thought my closing line was funny. Later Matt served up a long toss to a young fan who passed on an autograph to catch a pass from a football star ! Only at the Pro Bowl !

Job well done the crew beat a fast retreat and returned to the Hawaiian Hilton Village hotel. Paul AKA Merlin was beat from shooting hundreds of still photos, Superbowlwayne did his stick and Scary Barry covered the whole Ilihani area with unadulterated charisma ! The Hawaiian Elvis left the scene, a hunk of burning love !

Remember Fans ! Check for another installment of The Road TO THE PRO BOWL and always keep in mind " I got the GPS to your heart baby ! "
