RAIDERS AND THE NFL QUATERBACK BLUES

By Scary Barry Rodriguez           October 4, 2013

After the Oakland Raider's last game against the Washington Redskins it was apparent the the quarterback situation needed change.
Matt Flynn who was playing in place of Terrelle Pryor had a horrendous game. He suffered from chronic hesitation and was sacked seven times. Now rookie Matt McGloin  from Penn state has been moved up to the second spot on the depth chart. I'm not sure this the answer. Every week in the NFL , quarterbacks are going down like bowling pins ! It didn't help that the NFL changed some rules to take away the advantages of the " read option " for quarterbacks.

Coach Dennis Allen
knows that Terrelle Pryor who is starting against the San Diego Chargers this week can very well take another hit and be out again due to the NFL's " concussion " policy. The question is whether Rashad Jennings in place of the often injured Darren McFadden , can provide enough of a rushing game to take the heat off of Pryor ? This will be a challenge for the Oakland's patchwork offensive line.

The questions that the Oakland Raiders are faced with plaque every other team in the NFL. Monday Night football's last game pitting the Cleveland Browns against the Buffalo Bills is a perfect example of this. Early in the game , Cleveland's hot handed
Brian Hoyer was knocked out for the season with a ACL after taking a hit from Buffalo safety Tashaun Gipson in the first quarter. Back in was Brandon Weeden who Hoyer had deposed as the starting quarterback. Now the Browns are in the market for another backup quarterback. Lets not forget that Buffalo's E.J. Manuel was also put out of the game with an injury now described as lateral collateral ligament sprain !

No team is safe !  The San Francisco 49ers acquired veteran
QB John Skelton to replace Colt McCoy as the backup for  Colin Kaepernick. Colt McCoy as seen in the preseason games has a problem with throwing the ball away. He will always just charge up the middle even if it means losing yards ! That is good if your a U.S. Marine but doesn't cut it in the NFL !

Now all the backup quarterbacks are just a heartbeat away from having to step up. Some teams might do well to pan the
CFL for quarterback gold ! Thats how thin the ranks are of those who are ready to start at quarterback in the NFL right now ! Rule changes haven't stemmed the tide of injuries.

One of the few battle ready quarterbacks
Josh Freeman was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this last Thursday October 3, 2013. Josh has been the victim of rumor and a leak revealing a medical condition. He is talented and a good fit for the right team ! Every NFL team has to ask themselves if their backup quarterbacks are good enough to prevent their season from being a loss leader !  Every team with a pocket passer is in peril. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady aren't the most durable quarterbacks around !

The NFL needs to bring back
NFL Europe to help train a ready crop of available battle tested quarterbacks. Having a game or two in London , England isn't more important than having enough talent to put a good product on the field at all times for the fans and the sponsors with deep pockets !
