LP Field , NASHVILLE , Tenn. - This game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans started boring and finished boring. For the second game in a row the Niner's offense stayed with the ground game . Coming off an injury Jake Locker couldn't do anything against the 49er defense in entire first half.
In the first quarter the Niners scored on a 44 yard Phil Dawson field goal. That was it for the first quarter. Locker and company couldn't sustain a drive in the first two quarters. In the second quarter the Niners scored twice on the ground. First a 20 yard touchdown run by Kaepernick and then by Frank Gore on a 1 yard run. Tremaine Brock cut off a what could have been a successful Titan drive with an interception.
Finally Kaepernick seemed comfortable in running when needed , handing off to Gore and hitting the occasion drive preserving pass. This same Titan team that gave the Seahawks a run for their money seemed in a dream state in the first half. Chris Johnson was being held to short yardage and Locker was in the get rid of the ball mode ! Halftime score 17-0
The Niners used the same offensive tactics in the second half . Run the ball , run down the game clock and don't turn the ball over ! They had on time consuming drive in the third quarter, which culminated in a 1 yard touchdown run to put the score at 24-0. Tennessee scored twice in the fourth quarter but it hardly mattered. They didnt have the time to win !
Kassin Osgood scooped up a punt return fumble for another Niner touchdown. Despite Locker's efforts in the fourth quarter , too much time had been used up already by the ground and pound Niner offense. This game was not an artistic display by San Francisco. They improved their record to 5-2 and didn't suffer any major injuries to their roster. If they are to hold up until Mario Maningham and Michael Crabtree returns, then Greg Roman is going to need Keapernick to run more !
Justin Smith had two quarterback sacks and the defense limited big plays by the Titans. Chris Johnson was held to 39 rushing yards but scored on a 66 yard pass play. Without Aldon Smith, the Niner pass rush is not good enough to beat the top teams. Colin Kaepernick had a good game passing for 199 yards on 13/21 and rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown. Frank Gore carried the ball 24 times for 70 yards. He had no long break away plays but his grinding runs took a big bite out of the game clock !
The San Francisco 49ers have lost to the only good teams they have played , Seattle and Indianapolis. Going across the pond to play the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars in London isn't really going answer any questions. Without wide receivers getting it done , if Greg Roman doesn't open the 49er playbook , the offense is finished !
Right now , opposing defensive secondaries just have to keep the ball in front of them. The 2013 schedule has been good to the Niners. After the BYE week the 49er offense will have to score more against Carolina and New Orleans. The defense is missing some pieces and is no longer strong enough by themselves to win against a high scoring team. Kaepernick ran in a touchdown from over the left side ! Note ! All the football experts talking about Kaepernick only dangerous going to the right ! Do something different !
If the Niners get their act together they can get to the Super Bowl again and win it ! The Denver Broncos lost to a middle of the road Indianapolis Colts , who also beat the 49ers and Seahawks. The Greenbay Packers and the New England Patriots are struggling this year. There are no football Godzillas in the NFL 2013 season. San Francisco has the talent to beat all these teams. The question is whether the coaching can live up to the hype !
