Sports Authority Field , Denver , Co
-  This contest between the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos turned out as expected. Led by Payton Manning , the Broncos in their third game did nothing to dispel the notion that they are the best team in the NFL at the moment.

For the the Oakland Raiders this game represented a positive step in the development of
Terrelle Pryor as a legitimate NFL quarterback. This wasn't reflected in the game statistics but all the same Pryor didn't turn the ball over while showing poise under fire !  Coach Dennis Allen is putting his team through the paces , trying to sort things out during this rebuild period.

From the very first quarter Payton Manning displayed his mastery at the quarterback position by reading the Raider defense like an open book. With
Eric Decker , Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker beating the Oakland secondary all game long , Payton just cruised for most of the game going 32/37 for 374 yards and 3 touchdowns. When he recognized Raider blitzes or pass only defensive sets , he was happy to hand the ball off to Ronnie Hillman , Mote Ball or Moreno. They combined for 164 yards rushing .

In the second quarter Pryor connected with
Denarius Moore for a 73 yard passing touchdown. Yet at the half Denver led 27 to 7 and had totally controlled the game. They actually had to settle for field goals twice. The disappointment clearly showed on Manning's face !

In the second half the Broncos ran the game clock down while scoring on a field goal and another touchdown . Pryor had one long drive that culminated with
Darren McFadden using a wildcat formation to throw a 16 yard touchdown pass to Marcel Reese. At this time the score was 30-14 and time was just running off the game clock. Denver amassed 536 total yards and ran 73 plays in the game. Late in the fourth quarter , Pryor attempted to run the ball in from the six yard line and was stopped in his tracks by a helmet to helmet hit delivered by Wesley Woodyard. After the game it was confirmed that Pryor had suffered a concussion. Matt Flynn entered the game and then Darren McFadden ran it in from one yard out to cap the Raider's scoring for the game at 21 points.

The Raider defense played hard against a never ending array of formations directed by Manning . In his sixteenth season , Payton can instantly read the defensive formations and exploit any mismatches. On one particular play
Charles Woodson attempted a safety blitz and Manning capitalized on it to hit his receiver for a touchdown. He used three tight ends lined up on one side to open big gaps for his runners. LaMarr Houston was Oakland's top defender with one sack , causing more than a few rushed passes.

The Oakland offensive line allowed Pryor to be chased all over the backfield in the first half but held up very well in the second half. There just weren't many open looks for Pryor. When he had the time his most reliable receiver was
Denarius Moore who had 6 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. He had one long run for 32 yards. The Broncos defense hit hard and displayed speed at all positions.

Despite experiencing multiple injuries in the defensive secondary during the game, Denver's level of play remained solid. They only allowed 49 rushing yards and Darren McFadden was a minus 3 yards for the game. The Raider receivers dropped many passes due to big hits.

The Oakland Raider team on the whole showed improvement on both sides of the ball despite the final outcome. The Denver Broncos used the game to rotate their different offensive packages in and out using different sets of players. Sometime there was a totally different look on multiple plays in a row. When
Wes Welker is only your third receiver its tough to cover everyone. Eric Decker had 8 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown. Demaryius Thomas caught 10 passes for 94 yards and Wes Welker had 7 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The only question for the Denver Broncos is whether they can limit the number of injuries enough to maintain their present level of play. Payton Manning is at his best and supported by a well balanced team. At this point in the 2013 season many contenders are having off years. The Broncos could have scored more if they hadn't decided to use most of their roster to prepare for future games !    Put that in your pipe and think about it !
