Candlestick point, San Francisco, CA - A week after the most dominant offensive performance of all time , the San Francisco 49ers fell hard to the New York Giants 26-3 before a hometown crowd. The Scary one and the loyal ticket buying fans witnessed an alien abduction ! The real Niners had been replaced by zombie like figures that allowed the Giants to play their usual boring game yet render a beat down to the San Francisco team.

Somewhere along the way Greg Roman's offensive strategy came completely undone. Early on the Niners seemed to be successful in running the ball but this was quickly shelved for the passing game. The usually error free Alex Smith threw three interceptions. New York's offense played on a short field  for most of the game. The Giants scored only two touchdowns, a 6 yard pass to Victor Cruz and a 1 yard run by Ahmad Bradshaw. Kicker Lawrence Tynes booted four field goals . This was more than enough scoring for New York considering the fact that the Niners could only muster one field goal by David Akers in the first quarter.

The San Francisco defense held up for three quarters and then seemed to tire. The Giant's defense sacked Alex Smith four times and were not fooled by any of the Niner play calls . There was no halftime adjustment by the Niner coaching staff.                         Eli Manning had too much time to throw because the 49er pass rush was missing in action ! On offense the Niner receivers appeared to have mailed in their on field performance. When Alex Smith was pressured by a heavy pass rush he went for the quick short pass. The New York secondary seemed to be in the perfect position almost every time ! What happened to the creative offensive play calling of Greg Roman ? Was he on vacation too ?

The game was an ugly fest for the entire second half ! Most of the Niner fans hit the exits at the end of the third quarter. How can I blame them ! They showed up but the team never got off the bus ! There were only highlights for the Giants. New York RB Ahmad Bradshaw gained 116 yards on 27 carries for most of the team's 149 yards of rushing. QB Eli Manning went 15/28 for 128 yards through the air. The was Alex Smith's worst game yet in the Jim Harbaugh era. Smith was reduced to a little lamb slaughtered in the pocket !

Besides the inept play of the Niner offense their special team play deserves dishonorable mention !       David Akers has been in a slump lately and missed two field goals that were in easy range. For the second game in a row the kick coverage left much to be desired ! The Giant's David Wilson returned a kick 66 yards fueling one scoring drive. Meanwhile the Niner return men ran right at their tacklers!

This dismal game pointed to some things this writer had noted in previous articles. What was the Niner strategy for playing from behind ? This question still has not been answered. I don't consider this game as a display of a dominant New York Giant's defense ! Its been inconsistent for them on a game to game basis. The 49er defense played as well as can be expected when the offense is totally missing for the entire game. The Niner offense seemed like a work in progress at the very best !

Note : I dedicate this article to the thousands of unemployed American workers who have been futilely waiting for the Republican economic solution ! Good Luck ! I have a bridge I want sell ! Can we please rewind the tape back to 1950 !
