NINERS SHAKY WINNERS

GAME A PG EXPERIENCE

By Scary Barry               September 15, 2011

( San Francisco )- On the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 terrorists attacks the Jim Harbaugh led San Francisco Forty Niners played the Seattle Seahawks. They are undoubtedly one of the worst teams in the NFL. Even though the Niners were victorious 33-17 the game didn't leave the Scary one feeling confident about the next game against the Dallas Cowboys. Sans the heroic two touchdown performance of
Ted Ginn Jr., a kickoff return touchdown of 102 yds and 59 seconds later a return of punt for a touchdown, the unimpressive Seahawks most likely would have had no problem scoring on a tired 49er defense.

Coach Harbaugh"s idea of an offense was a rewind of the Mike Singletary run no matter what method. I didn't buy his post game explanation that the success of the defense predicated his extremely conservative offensive attack. QB Alex Smith appeared tentative and at times confused. At least three of his passes could have easily been interceptions against a better opponent. In the first half the Niner defense , especially the likes of Ray McDonald, Justin Smith and Paarys Haralson kept the weak Seahawks in check. The Niner corners didn't really defend well. Newcomer Tarell Brown # 25 was being beat like a drum. In the second half the Seahawks had no problem moving the ball against San Francisco.

So there is the rub ! How can you depend on the defense holding an opponent down when the offense can't score on three successive plays from the one yard line ? The Niner defense isn't so dominant that the offense is relieved of its duty to score points ! Plus, due to the NFL lockout , the players haven't had the normal amount of practice with the newly installed offense. What better time for the offense to work out the kinks than in the second half against a bad team ! I have no doubt that should this Niner team fall behind the Dallas Cowboys early in the game it will be curtains !

Someone should remind Harbaugh that he isn't coaching a college team anymore. Maybe some one should also remind the San Francisco Forty Niner ownership that San Francisco isn't Kansas ! The new changes brought about by Security concerns didn't really make the fan experience more enjoyable. The rearranged parking wasn't bad but I noticed that the new rules put a big damper on tailgating. Prior to the game the Niners had a dedicated area for entertainment and other activities. If this was supposed to replace the experience of tailgating then it was an unqualified failure. Some white bread rock group was playing out of date music pretending it was Disney World. The response of the NFL to Raider inspired violence was over the top !

Yet I'm sure that the team ownership wasn't at all fazed because they plan to dump all the longtime blue collar season ticket holders when the new stadium is built in Santa Clara. Then they can emulate the mid west more conservative way of doing things. Gone will be the beer gulping fans to be replaced by the text messaging, blue tooth wearing, laptop , distracted watchers, transacting business while at the game ! For now, local fans can expect a PG experience watching a dreadful football performance. Only the unplanned event such as a Ted Ginn Jr. running for 268 yds can prevent certain disaster ! So drink up San Francisco fans ! Do your thing in the parking lot fast ! Hopefully if you're blast enough by halftime you won't notice the score or the white bread entertainment ! Just watch the Oakland Raiders when they're televised !
