(SAN FRANCISCO) - On Tuesday May 24, the NFL Rules committee changed the policy on flagrant hits above the waist,( head and neck ).Players can't use their helmets, face mask, forearm or shoulder to deliver a hit on players in a "defenseless" position. I am not going to get overly detailed about the exact language of these new rules. Because of the greater instances of concussions and serious injuries the NFL and the owners have now tried to micro manage what is the inherently violent game of football.
James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley , both OLB's for the Pittsburg Steelers came out against the new rules. To quote Harrison, " I'm absolutely sure now after this last rule change that the people making the rules at the NFL are idiots ". Woodley stated " man they 're getting ridiculous ", and "football is turning soft now ". The Scary one is inclined to agree with both Harrison and Woodley. When you play professional football you are assuming a known risk of getting your mellon busted !
Lets be honest ! Many blood thirsty fans attend games or watch on the tube to see someone get a beatdown ! If Americans want to watch a cream puff sport they can always watch international soccer. Big hits are a big part of football. The players in the NFL now are bigger, stronger and faster. When they collide somethings got to give. Football is not for the faint of heart ! Harrison calls the new changes the " Steeler's rule ". Be serious folks ! How can the Steelers or the Oakland Raiders survive without maxing out on cheap shots !
Medical advances have created a situation whereby players are now aware of just how susceptable their heads are to concussions and other injuries. This reality will undoubtedly lead to the end of longterm contracts and it might lead to much shorter careers for most players. Considering the risk,salaries might go higher and players will have to be insured for multi millions to compensate for possible career ending injuries.
Football is the All American game, right up there with Mom's apple pie and George Washington. It is a way for the masses to vicariously experience the violence they crave ! Just like in boxing, if you drop your guard you might get your mellon busted ! ( read: head for those who aren't hip!) Too many rule changes to take the punch out of football and will end up as full contact chess !
