The Niners defense chased Jet QB Mark Sanchez all over the field while their offense was generally ineffective. Alex Smith seemed out of sync with his receivers . Michael Crabtree seemed lost in the crowd and Mrio Manningham picked up the slack. Nothing at all happened in the first quarter. In the second quarter the 49er defense shut down New York . Then coach Jim Harbaugh had the offense use a variety of different running formations which confused the Jet's defense that was missing Darrelle Revis . Back up QB Colin Kaepernick was brought in and used a type of wild cat option , running 7 yards for a touchdown. Later in the quarter David Akers hit on a 36 yard field goal. At the half the score stood at 10-0 in favor of San Francisco. Yet the sputtering Niner offense missed the opportunity to make the game a blow out early ! The Jets were playing like blind men.
The second half brought more 49er scoring but displayed sloppy play with penalties on the defense. It wasn't until late in the third quarter that Frank Gore punched the ball into the end zone from 2 yards out to put the score at 17-0 in favor of San Francisco. The Niners defense led by Aldon Smith were brutalizing the Jets. The big hits kept on coming and the Jet's receivers and runners felt it on every offensive play. Even at 17-0 , the Jets knew the game was out of reach !
In the fourth quarter an injury to Jet receiver Santonio Holmes added to their woes . On a catch at the San Francisco 40 yard line , Holmes fell to the turf clutching his leg , giving up the ball. Carlos Rodgers grabbed it and with a convoy of 49er players blocking , rumbled 51 yards for a touchdown putting the score at 24-0 . On both sides of the ball the Jets were in shambles ! David Akers kicked another field goal from 40 yards out making it 27-0. Then the Niners just used a grinding running attack to eat up game clock to set up another touchdown. Kendall Hunter , who had been running in tandem with Frank Gore , scored from 1 yard out to close out the 49er scoring, 34 -0 ! This was set up by a blocked punt . Late in the quarter Colin Kaepernick was put back in the game and helped close it out.
It was a needed victory for the San Francisco 49ers and one of the worst defeats for the New York Jets. QB Mark Sanchez was booed by the hometown fans and the Niner defense just pushed around their offensive line. Yet this game didn't allay some of the doubts that were the result of the Vikings victory over San Francisco ! Alex Smith was inaccurate with his passes and his receivers dropped easy passes. Once again the Niners sloppy play resulted in 8 penalties for 67 yards. The offense didn't answer the nagging question , could they come from behind to win ? Coach Harbaugh managed to impose his grinding, clock eating offense on the weak Jets. San Francisco's time of possession was 36.56 to the Jet's 23.04 ! New York could only manage 45 total yards rushing. The jury is still out on the Niner offense. One important positive was the use of varied running formations and Colin Kaepernick in a wild cat option in the first half. Upcoming opponents will now have to add this possibility to their defensive game plans.
