"Scary" Barry Rodriguez Productions (BRP): SCARY BARRY'S JOURNEY TO THE PRO BOWL PART 3

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE , HAWAII - Thursday morning Scary Barry , Superbowl Wayne and Justin headed out in the not so early morning for Hickam Air Force base for the NFC/AFC Pro Bowl practice. Today was part of " Military Base Day " . This involved Air Force and Navy personnel and their families . In addition to the morning's practice other activities were scheduled. The start time for the practice was set at 10:00 am , so the Scary one managed to catch six hours of sleep .

Owing to the troubled times we all live in , heightened security is the rule. All the media , including us provided information beforehand to the military to help them make identification . Yesterday it was overcast and today we came out into the rain. Our camera men Daniel and Dean were already there. A massive crowd surrounded the practice field which was adjacent to an airfield with huge C17 Globe Master air transports and other large grey colored military planes were parked.

A long time ago the Scary one was in the U.S. Navy and for the first time since 1969 I was on a military base. The world was much different then and so am I. The crew set up their cameras in such a fashion as to catch the arrival of the NFC squad. Superbowl Wayne , Justin and myself had our game faces on just waiting for the team buses to arrive. Then they rolled up and the cameras started filming ! Everyone was in good spirits despite the rain. The defensive and offensive units practiced going through 7 on 7 drills , kicking drills and showing off for their military fans. All along the side lines Air Force and Navy personnel mingled with the media , dressed in camouflaged BDUs ( Battle dress uniforms ).

The sun came out and banished the rain for a time. The Hawaii Five O crew went over the NFC roster for the day's interviews. Its like a wish list because sometimes you aren't able to get who you want. Just like the Rolling Stones song " You Can't Always Get What You Want " . The Scary one is feeling stoked , looking good and smiling ! When the practice is over the players will go to the barricades set up in front of the stands to give autographs to the fans.

Practice ends and Scary Barry sprints out onto the field to catch some players before they reach the barricades. Going full speed I almost tackle the 6ft 6" Jared Allen DE for the Minnesota Vikings. Good thing the big guy has a sense of humor ! Its quick and out on the interviews. Then its on the next one and the next one ! Camera man Dean is running at the same time toting his big camera with a tripod. Then the signal is given to load up the players in the buses. Media folks scramble to bag more interviews before the players catch their ride ! Its rock and roll sans the music !

Now , everyone is waiting for the AFC squad to arrive. The the heavens open up and heavy duty rain comes pouring down ! Its as if God pulled out a super soaker squirt gun and let loose with a ton of liquid sunshine ! When the AFC buses arrive they are greeted with smiles and a steady downpour ! Super Bowl Wayne is cranking up the volume, greeting the players and making everyone laugh ! Most of the media , NFL officials and the players are caught off guard by the heavy rain. The players carry on for their military fans.

Meanwhile everyone else is under whatever cover they can find ! My shoes are so waterlogged that they are squeaking ! The only thing missing is surf boards and sharks. There is enough water for that ! The practice ends and Superbowl Wayne, Justin, Daniel , Dean and Scary Barry soldier on doing on field interviews. The fans are digging it scoring autographs. The sun never returns. There is no end to the rain. Where are the Navy Seals when

you need them ?

The day is over for the crew now. Its time to wade through deep pools of water to our cars. We all made it out alive ! Hopefully all of our equipment survived the rain intact. Superbowl Wayne , Justin and the Scary one depart , heading for dry land. What an experience for Justin, our eighteen year old ,crew member, who is breaking into the media business under the tutelage of Super Bowl Wayne ! I'm not sure his Mom will believe his story ! But all of our intrepid Hawaii Five O media crew will ! We have soaked clothes to prove it .
